How to Set Social Media Objectives

A six-step framework for turning a reason to post into a clear, measurable social media objective.

A human hand places one coral flag on top of three small stone paper steps, a deliberate goal.

1. Know why you’re posting

Is it followers? Leads? Awareness? Credibility? Start by identifying the purpose.

2. Know where you are now: the baseline

How many followers do you have? What does your reach look like? Do you have engagement? Are you getting leads?

3. Know where you want to be: the goal

Define the follower count, engagement rate, reach increase or number of leads you want to achieve.

4. Figure out the gap

The gap is the distance between your baseline and your goal.

Calculating the gap
MetricCalculation
Follower growthGoal − baseline
Relative growth (%)(Goal − baseline) ÷ baseline × 100
Engagement-rate changeGoal rate − baseline rate, in percentage points

Relative growth requires a non-zero baseline. An engagement rate rising from 2% to 3% is a 1 percentage-point change and 50% relative growth.

5. Set a timeline

When do you need this? Within one month, by the end of a quarter, or by a specific date?

6. Put it all together

Combine the metric, target and timeline: “I want to reach [goal] for [metric] by [deadline].” For example: gain a defined number of followers in a set number of months, or generate a defined number of leads by a specific date.
